East Multnomah County One Stop Career System
Microenterprise Inventors Program of Oregon (MIPO)
History
Until now, it has been nearly impossible to find a one-stop where you receive everything you need as an inventor.
For the micro-enterprise inventors working on their own, scams are rampant. Invention promotion scams cost U.S. inventors $200 million annually.
In 2004, USPTO issued Oregon 1,725 patents, 789 patents to Intel (which has a large manufacturing facility located near Portland) and 741 to large businesses representing 89% of the market.
What is MIPO's Mission?
MIPO's mission is to provide business services and resources for the micro-enterprise independent inventors of Oregon.
How do you help other Oregon inventors clubs?
We compliment other inventor's clubs in Oregon by offering a resource center, where we provide print and web resources as well as expert training to participants. MIPO has a 1200 sq. ft. training facility that is 100% wheelchair accessible and located on a central public transit line. As an economic development entity our goal is to continue to advocate on behalf of our clients so that resources are accessible to them.
How did you get the idea to help differently abled inventors?
ECOS has contracted with Kedma Ough, MBA as Director of the MIPO project. Ms. Ough developed the concept after meeting with several inventors that had protected their invention through the purchase of a utility patent but had no market potential. She realized that a program needed to be established that support training, counseling, and resources for micro-inventors.
What is your relationship to the Lemelson Foundation?
ECOS received the Lemelson Foundation Grant in August 2006.
The Lemelson Foundation is a Portland-based philanthropy working to improve lives through invention in the U.S. and developing countries. For more information visit www.lemelson.org
